Wax Candle Festival Sale

The Wax Candle festival is held in the white town of Sale, just north of Rabat, on the Bouregreg Estuary each year in May. This traditional festival is said to date back to the Barbary period when the corsairs carried wax lanterns in procession to the town’s patron saint, Sidi Abdallah Ben Hassoun, to ask for protection for their onward journey.

Today locals retain the traditions and local culture with a parade through the streets with performers bright colours and traditional costumes carrying lanterns made of sculpted wax.
The lanterns are large colourful structures covered with intricate patterns and designs which form the main attraction of the procession.
