Imilchil Marriage Festival
High in the Atlas Mountains, the small village of Imilchil hosts the famous annual engagement and marriage festival. Each year families from the neighbouring areas come together to socialise and celebrate the end of the harvest in late August/ early September .
The town is part of the Midelt Province and the festival takes place high on the plateau in a small valley between Bouzmouz and Agoudal.
The local nomadic Berber tribe are called the Ait Hdiddou. During the festival young girls and boys from the different villages meet for the purpose of marriage.
The Legend of Isli and Tislit
Isli and Tislit are Morocco’s ‘Romeo and Juliette’ according to local legend the twin lakes in Imilchil are named after them. The classic story of young love from different tribes, forbidden to meet. The tragic lovers tears of despair are said to have formed the lakes as they cried themselves to death for not being allowed to be together and get married.
The festival is full of colour, music, flirting and dancing while young couples in traditional dress meet and enjoy the celebratory atmosphere under the watchful eyes of their families.
For generations the festival has been an important event for the local familes and an opportunity to meet and discuss local issues and celebrate the harvest.
A small number tourists visit this unique cultural festival each year however it is mainly attended by locals from the region.
