Each Easter, the South Bank Centre presents a special type of show that aims to transcend conventional notions of theatre, music and dance. This year’s Easter Delirium show is Taoub, a spirited circus from Morocco updated for the 21st century. Directed by Aurélien Bory of Compagnie 111, Taoub, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall from 14 – 18 April, blends the sinuous sound of live Moroccan music, modern physical theatre and the tried and true techniques of hundreds of years of acrobatics.

Punchy and raw, Taoub is family entertainment in the truest sense. Five of the show’s 12 performers are members of the Hammich family, for whom the pursuit of acrobatics stretches back over eight generations honing their craft on the sandy beaches of Tangier. Themes of friendly competition and solidarity, as well as subtle social commentary, are presented with tongue-in-cheek wit. Aerial antics and optical illusions are accompanied by traditional Arabic music.

With a background in both physics and architectural acoustics, Aurélien Bory has been an avid juggler since he was a teenager. He studied at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris and went on to teach at the Toulouse Centre for Circus Arts before founding Compagnie 111 in 2000.
