The botanical name of the henna plant is Lawsonia inermis.
Henna is a plant used in Morocco and many other countries/cultures to dye the skin in intricate patterns, sometimes called temporary tattoos. In Morocco, it is quite common to see henna on women's hands and feet for weddings, special occasions, or even just for a treat, while men use it on their hands and arms only for extremely special occasions.
For a special ocassion women can have designs done by a Moroccan neqasha (henna artist). A powder from the crushed leaves of the henna plant is mixed with water to for a paste which is then applied to the skin. The paste must be left to dey and the beautiful henna designs will be left, which will last for 2 to 3 weeks.
